Multifocal and Toric IOls

Multifocal and Toric IOLs

Multifocal Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) were initially approved by the FDA in 2005.  Alcon Surgical in Ft. Worth, TX is widely considered to be the preeminent manufacturer of IOLs in the US and has introduced its 3rd generation of Trifocal IOLs, the PanOptix Pro https://www.myalcon.com/professional/cataract-surgery/iols/clareon-panoptix-pro.  At the national annual American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in October, 2025, cataract surgery experts marveled at the phenomenal visual outcomes experienced by patients who underwent laser cataract surgery with implantation of a PanOptix Pro IOL.  This lens, when implanted in both eyes, provides the patient with phenomenal vision for distance, intermediate, and reading without spectacle correction. Furthermore the depth perception and peripheral field of vision is outstanding with the PanOptix Pro IOL.  Approximately 98 percent of patients with bilateral PanOptix Pro lenses will no longer require eyeglasses for visual rehabilitation.

(Naturally, sunglasses are still required in South Florida, regardless of whether cataract surgery was performed.  The sunglasses require UV-400 blocker and polarization on both the front and back surfaces to minimize the chance of macular degeneration, ocular melanoma, pterygium, pingueculas, and eyelid cancers.)

Unique to the PanOptix Pro is the fact that this lens provides an uninterrupted light distribution across the full visual range going from distance to intermediate to reading. Therefore, no matter the focal length of the object being viewed, the patient has a stellar clear and vivid picture being visualized.  In marked comparison, patients with a monofocal lens will still require eyeglasses for most activities of daily living.  Worse yet, those with monofocal lenses will have zones of vision which are blurred out, essentially large blind spots.  As a result, quality of vision for driving, participating in sports and exercise, working on digital devices, or reading will be far superior with the PanOptix Pro as compared to the alternative lenses.

Anecdotally, the vast majority of cataract surgeons fervently believe that the inherent ability of the PanOptix Pro IOL to provide an uninterrupted light distribution across the full visual range will result in far fewer incidents of patients tripping or falling which can result in bodily injury.

Patients who have astigmatism will benefit from the Toric PanOptix Pro which has all the advantages of the PanOptix Pro while concurrently correcting for astigmatism.  Simultaneous astigmatic correction and cataract removal with placement of a Toric PanOptix Pro lens results in an incredibly enhanced quality of vision at distance, intermediate and near.  Again there is a 98 percent chance of spectacle independence with these 3rd generation multifocal lenses.

Both the PanOptix Pro and the Toric PanOptix Pro (for those with moderate to significant astigmatism are now being utilized with tremendous success and phenomenal patient satisfaction.  These intraocular lenses provide an unparalleled stellar quality of vision for near, intermediate, and distance vision!

No matter which option is best for you, customized laser cataract surgery is virtually pain free, and the actual lens implant can be completed in minutes. In fact, most patients are back to their normal activities the very next day.
